1943: The Battle of Midway – a vertically scrolling shooter video game, a sequel to 1942, developed and published by Capcom in 1988.
The original version of the game was released as an arcade game on the Capcom Commando platform. Capcom released its own port for the NES. Ports for the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, and ZX Spectrum were released under license.
The game takes place in the Pacific Ocean during World War II near the coast of Midway Atoll. The player, piloting a Lockheed P-38 Lightning, must repel Japanese air attacks, destroy Japanese air and naval forces, and ultimately destroy the Japanese battleship Yamato.
This game can be considered a set of additional missions for the previous game, with slightly improved graphics. The plot is exactly the same: an Allied aircraft flies over the ocean, shooting down squadrons of enemy aircraft. Almost all of them are destroyed with a single shot, but armored multi-engine bombers appear from time to time, which are quite difficult to hit.
The weapon set is identical to that of the previous game: a twin machine gun, the shot of which can be increased by holding the fire button, and a lightning bolt that destroys everything within the screen. Plus, there’s also a dive dive, where you become inaccessible to the enemy. The main difference: you can pick up a power-up that increases the shot’s power. If you shoot at it for a while, it will change to another weapon, which can be fired in a scattered pattern or in a semicircle.
