Tales of Phantasia (Japanese: テイルズ オブ ファンタジア Teiruzu obu Fantashia) – a role-playing game from the Japanese game developer Namco. It is the first main installment in the largely unrelated “Tales of” series. An anime adaptation of the game was also produced.
Tales of Phantasia was released in 1995 for the SNES, and the first remake was released in 1998 for the PSX. These versions of Tales of Phantasia were released only in Japan, but fan translations in English and German exist. A remake was released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. It has also been available in Germany since March 31, 2006.
A further remake was released in Japan for the PSP on September 6, 2006, featuring full voice acting. The PSP version is primarily based on the PSX remake. The fourth remake is called Tales of Phantasia X and includes both a remake of Tales of Phantasia and a remake of its sequel, Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon. It was released exclusively in Japan on August 5, 2010.
A version for Apple iOS was released in the App Store on September 24, 2013, but was withdrawn on May 28, 2014.
The legendary RPG whose story begins with this iconic line is Tales of Phantasia (hereafter referred to as TOP), a SFC software released in December 1995. A groundbreaking battle system, a well-crafted scenario, the fun of solving puzzles that is an essential part of RPGs.
It was a work that boasted the highest quality in every aspect at the time. Since the release of Tales of Destiny, the excitement has been greater than expected, and in response to your passionate requests for a PS version, a dream project has finally come true! A PS version of TOP!
Tales of Phantasia takes place approximately 4,000 years after Tales of Symphonia, and important objects and characters that first played a role in ToS reappear. Furthermore, Tales of Phantasia is, besides Star Ocean, the only game for the Super Famicom to be released on a 48-Mbit cartridge.
The gameplay is very similar to that of other role-playing games. However, the combat system was unique for its time. Battles were not played in turns, but rather in real time from a side view. Thus, the combat system in Tales of Phantasia is more comparable to that of beat-’em-up games such as Street Fighter.
