Tetris 99 (Japanese title: テトリス99, Hepburn: Tetorisu 99, stylized as TETRIS 99) – a battle royale video game developed by the developer studio Arika and released by Nintendo on February 14, 2019 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
Tetris 99 was announced on February 13, 2019 in a Nintendo Direct presentation and was made available the following day as a free download from the Nintendo eShop, initially exclusively for members of the Nintendo Switch Online service. Later, only the Tetris 99 mode was playable exclusively for members of the Nintendo Switch Online service, as offline game modes were added to the game by purchasing the paid download extension Big Block. On September 20, 2019, a retail version was released with the Big Block DLC and a 12-month membership to Nintendo Switch Online.
Tetris 99 is a competitive multiplayer version of the puzzle game Tetris, which borrows elements from the Battle Royale game principle. In Tetris 99 mode, the user first plays the well-known Tetris game principle online: The program randomly selects a stone from seven given shapes, which gradually moves from the top half of the screen downwards.
The player tries to arrange the stones in such a way that continuous lines with no empty spaces are created. If he succeeds, the line is resolved – but in Tetris 99, no points are awarded. If he manages to resolve several rows at once with a stone through clever arrangement, this is valued higher than for individual rows. Resolving four rows at once is called Tetris.
If the player cannot resolve his rows and they pile up to the top of the playing field, the game is over. The difficulty level of the game is determined, among other things, by the time the player falls and thus the remaining reaction time.
