Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow – console games in the jRPG genre created for the Game Boy console by Game Freak and published by Nintendo in 1996. They are among the first games in the Pokémon series and the first released outside of Japan. There are minor differences in the individual versions, the most important being the ability to catch some Pokémon.

Pocket Monsters Red and Green were the first versions released. Development was completed by October 1995 and release was originally planned for December 21, 1995.

Using Blastoise as its mascot, the code, script, and artwork for Blue were used for the international releases of Red and Green, which were renamed to Red and Blue.

Two years after Red and Green, Nintendo released Pokémon Yellow, an enhanced version of Red and Blue, in Japan in 1998, and in North America and Europe in 1999 and 2000.

In September 2004, Nintendo released official remakes of these games for the Game Boy Advance: Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.

Unlike most RPGs, Pokémon’s player character does not actually take part in the battles. Instead, the main character explores the lands and catches Pokémon, which battle for him against his opponents’ Pokémon. Although you start the game with only one, you can eventually assemble a party of up to six different Pokémon. The members of this party can be switched at Pokémon Centers.

Pokémon Yellow’s quest is pretty much identical to the adventure in Pokémon Red and Blue. While most of the puzzles and locations are exactly the same as in the predecessors, certain plot elements and characters in Pokémon Yellow have been altered to more closely match the Pokémon TV show.
