Prince of Persia – a computer game series that began in 1989 with the game of the same name by Jordan Mechner for the Apple II home computer.

Prince of Persia is a series of arcade video games published by Brøderbund Software. The games revolve around the adventures of the titular prince and are set in medieval Persia.

Its then-advanced animations and sophisticated melee combat system set new standards for platform games. It was ported to various platforms and received several sequels. The first titles were published by Brøderbund; since 2001, the franchise has been owned by the French publisher Ubisoft.

A precursor to Prince of Persia was Karateka, also programmed by Jordan Mechner. Released in 1984 by Brøderbund (at the time for the Apple II, Atari, and Commodore 64, as well as Master Karateka for the Nintendo Game Boy), it was already notable for its exceptional character animation.

Prince of Persia was a true innovation for its time. For the first time, human movements were rendered with relative realism using rotoscoping.

The game was ported to numerous platforms, including Amiga, CPC, Apple II, Macintosh, Game Boy, PC, Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, NES, SAM Coupé, SNES, ZX Spectrum, and mobile phones. Despite its seemingly monotonous gameplay, the game managed to surprise and captivate players.

In 1999, Prince of Persia 3D was released for PC. Despite a new game engine and new features, this game failed to achieve commercial success. Therefore, its successor, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, wasn’t released until four years later for consoles (Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube) and PC. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time garnered numerous awards at E3 in Los Angeles. Critics and buyers alike agreed that this installment successfully revived the Prince of Persia mythos. Today, the Sands of Time tetralogy is among the most popular action-adventure games on all platforms. The screenplay was written by the Prince’s creator, Jordan Mechner.
