Rings of Power – a console role-playing game (RPG) released in 1991 for the Sega Mega Drive game console. It was developed by Naughty Dog and distributed by Electronic Arts. It was one of the most extensive role-playing games of the 16-bit console era. The game world was exceptionally large for the time, and the development time was over two and a half years. Although the game was sold out within three months, Electronic Arts decided not to re-release it due to company policy at the time, they wanted to concentrate on the sports game genre.
In Rings of Power, the player plays a young wizard named Buc, whose task (quest) is to find eleven rings of power. With these, the good god Nexus’ Staff of Creation can be restored and the evil demon Void can be defeated to bring about the legendary Golden Age again.
Unlike many other console RPGs of the time, such as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, Rings of Power has many features that it shares with PC RPGs such as Dungeon Master, Wizardry and The Bard’s Tale. The game is very open-ended (non-linear), so you can follow the different storylines as you wish and are not tied to a predetermined sequence. The game also contains more than 30 explorable towns and villages, hundreds of non-player characters (NPCs) with many different dialogues, dozens of side quests and random events.
